This intimate house show taping from the winter of 2018 represents the culmination of a tour by solo guitarists Cameron Knowler and Eli Winter. Starting in Dallas, winding along into Far West Texas, the duo honed a repertoire of solo and duo material. Arriving home in Houston, they were greeted with a packed house of familiar faces, making the din both confidence inspiring and fragile. In Knowler’s voice, you can hear weariness which manifests as playful banter shared with the crowd. His instruments, a Pisgah Dobson model banjo and Thompson DMA (captured by a single condenser microphone) are spry, yet in flux, representing the miles and diverse weather conditions of the state they traveled through. Playing traditional fiddle tunes gleaned from his heroes, James Bryan, Norman Blake, Jon Bekoff and bygone sources, as well as a slew of newly crafted originals, Knowler’s set is both reverential and autonomous. Within a month's time, this setlist would become his first EP, “Honey off a Rock” (referred to in the taping as “Sonoran Gothic”). This performance represents a nexus for the young musician, marking the start of his work as a solo recording artist and the aesthetic he continues to develop.
